“Happy Birthday, World” What better
way to teach a young child about Rosh Hashanah than to emphasize its
significance as the birthday of the world. Other aspects of this
holiday are difficult for very young children, but they do
understand birthdays! In this board book activities which children
might do on their birthdays are compared to activities done on Rosh
Hashanah. For example blowing birthday horns are compared to blowing
the shofar and eating a birthday cake is compared to eating apples
in honey.
In my preschool classroom we always celebrated Rosh Hashanah with a
birthday party including an apple honey cake, shofarot and games. It
was a great way to bring in the new year. Reading this book would be
a perfect summary activity.
